How Much Side Room a Sliding Gate Needs
Measure the Backrun, Not the Opening
People size a sliding gate by the gap it has to close. The number that decides whether it is possible is the clear distance available alongside the boundary for the gate to travel into. That distance has to be measured on the ground, following the actual line the gate will take, not estimated from a plan or paced out along the driveway.
The Arithmetic
For a ground track gate, allow the opening width plus a modest margin for the end stop and the drive mechanism. For a cantilever, allow the opening width plus the counterbalance tail, typically an additional half of the opening, plus that same margin. A twelve foot opening therefore needs somewhere near thirteen feet of backrun on a track and closer to nineteen on a cantilever.
Things That Quietly Eat the Backrun
The run has to be clear at gate height as well as at ground level, which is where mature planting, a mailbox, an air conditioning unit, a utility pedestal or a low wall become relevant. Overhanging branches count. So does a boundary that turns a corner within the required distance, which ends the run whether or not the ground continues.
Level Matters Along the Run
A ground track needs the rail to be laid true, so significant fall along the run means either regrading or accepting that the gate will be working uphill in one direction. A cantilever tolerates ground level changes underneath it well, since it never touches, but its posts still need firm consistent footings along the run.
When the Room Is Not There
Sometimes the honest answer is that a slider does not fit, and the options are a swing gate if any arc exists, a pair of leaves to halve the arc, or a bi folding arrangement that trades mechanical complexity for the smallest footprint of the three. Establishing that early is far better than discovering it after a gate has been designed around an assumption.
