What a Noisy Slider Is Telling You

Noise arrives before failure does, and a slider produces five recognisably different sounds. The diagnostic list at Mount Pleasant Sliding Gates Narcoculture separates them by where in the travel they occur, since sliding hardware on a Mount Pleasant driveway gives away which component is at fault by when it makes the sound rather than by how loud it is.

A Gritty Hiss That Moves

A hiss that appears on part of the run and disappears on the rest is debris on the track. It follows the position rather than the wheel, so it repeats at the same place every cycle. This is the cheapest fault on the list and a broom fixes it.

A Rumble That Rises With Speed

A continuous rumble across the whole travel that gets louder as the gate accelerates is a bearing that has lost its lubricant or taken in grit. It will be one wheel, and lifting each one and spinning it by hand identifies which. A rumble is a warning. A rumble with a click in it is a wheel that has already failed.

A Regular Click or Knock

A knock at a fixed interval, once per wheel revolution, is a flat spot or a broken element in that bearing. A knock at a fixed position in the travel is something on the track or a joint in the rail. Counting whether the sound repeats with distance or with position separates the two immediately.

A Metallic Rattle or Slap

Rattle usually comes from the chain. A slack chain slaps against its guides and can jump a sprocket tooth, and the sound changes when the gate reverses direction. A rattle that only occurs in wind is a guide roller pair adjusted too loose, letting the leaf move laterally.

A Squeal or a Scrape

Squeal is metal sliding on metal without rotation, which nearly always means a guide roller has seized and the frame is being dragged past it. Look for a polished stripe on the frame at guide height. A scrape at one end of travel only is the leading edge meeting its catch out of alignment.

Move It by Hand

Disengage the operator and push the gate slowly. Anything still audible is mechanical. Anything that disappears is the drive train, and that narrows the search to the chain, the sprocket and the motor mount before anything is taken apart.
